As the collective memory of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack on the United States fades, employees across the security spectrum will need to learn or refresh their learning on terrorism and national and international response structures. National security priorities may have shifted away from counterterrorism to strategic competition with peer competitors, but national (and international), state, and local governments and the private sector must still prepare for possible terrorism responses. The microcredential in Terrorism and Counterterrorism includes three asynchronous, online courses from the B.S. in Security Studies. SCST 2005: Introduction to Homeland Security includes practical and historical information on the structure of U.S. emergency response and counts as a SUNY gen ed requirement in Social Science. Students will learn key research methods and conduct original research on a homeland security topic. SOCI 3065: Perspectives on Terrorism provides an in-depth, critical look at the causes and impacts of terrorism. SCST 4005: Counterterrorism in a Changing World is an in-depth study of global terrorism and United States counterterrorism strategy with allied partners working overseas to counter it.

Students who have taken Introduction to Homeland Security or a similar course at a SUNY community college may transfer in and substitute that course for this required course in the microcredential. Faculty review and approval is required before a substitution can be made. 

Security Studies majors who complete the microcredential in Terrorism and Counterterrorism will automatically receive the microcredential on their transcript.
